What to Bring & Documents Needed to Buy a Car in California

Showing up prepared makes buying a used car in California faster and less stressful, whether you visit our Simi Valley lot, our El Monte lot, or any dealer. Here's what to bring so you can test drive, get financed, and sign with confidence.

Always bring these

• Valid driver's license. Must be current and match the name on your financing application.
• Proof of insurance. California requires insurance before you drive off. Get a quote ahead of time if you don't have a policy yet.
• Payment method, pre-arranged with the dealer. Cash, cashier's check, or credit card. Confirm what's accepted before you come in.

If you're financing a used car

This is where most of the documents come in. Bring these and we can send your application to lenders the same day. Exact requirements vary by finance company, so bring the full list to be safe.

• Government-issued photo ID. Valid driver's license or state ID.
• Proof of income. Your most recent W-2, your last 3 pay stubs, and your last 3 bank statements. Self-employed buyers can use bank statements in place of pay stubs.
• Social Security Number or ITIN. Either one works. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to finance a car in California.
• Proof of residence. Any bill with your name and current address on it (utility, phone, bank statement, or lease).
• Proof of insurance. California requires active coverage before you can drive the car off the lot.
• Up to 6 references. Name, address, and phone number for each. How many the lender wants varies, so bring a full list.
• Co-signer's documents. If someone is co-signing, they bring the same ID and income proof.

If you're trading in your current car

• Title or loan payoff information. Know what you still owe if there's a loan on the vehicle.
• Registration. Current registration helps verify ownership.
• All keys and remotes. Small detail, but it speeds up the appraisal.

Nice to have (not required)

• Service records for your trade-in
• A list of vehicles you've researched online
• Questions written down: monthly payment target, warranty, out-the-door price

If you're paying cash

Cash purchases are simpler. You still need a valid driver's license and proof of insurance before you drive off the lot. California requires insurance to be active at the time of purchase, so have your policy information ready or arrange coverage before you arrive.

Payment method: cash, cashier's check, or credit card. It's best to pre-arrange this with the dealer. Personal checks are often not accepted for the full purchase amount, so ask ahead of time and there are no surprises on purchase day.

California will also require a smog certification for most vehicles four years and older. Most dealers provide this as part of the sale, just confirm it's included before you finalize. Title transfer paperwork is handled at the dealership, and you'll receive your new plates by mail from the DMV.

What happens at signing

Knowing what you're about to sign makes the process feel less stressful. Here's what the paperwork typically looks like at a California used car purchase:

• Purchase agreement. Lists the vehicle, sale price, any fees (dealer doc fee, smog fee), taxes, and the total out-the-door number. Read this before you sign and make sure every number matches what you agreed to verbally.
• Retail installment contract (if financing). This is your loan agreement. It shows the APR, loan term, monthly payment, and total cost of credit over the life of the loan.
• Smog certification. The dealer provides this; you keep a copy.
• Title transfer documents. The dealer submits these to the California DMV on your behalf. You'll receive a title in the mail, along with registration paperwork.
